Detector-based radiation thermometry infers thermodynamic temperature from calibrated spectral radiance, while transfer thermometers and blackbody realizations disseminate a scale.
Key knowledge
Detector-based radiation thermometry infers thermodynamic temperature from calibrated spectral radiance, while transfer thermometers and blackbody realizations disseminate a scale. At high temperature, emissivity, spectral response, geometry, size-of-source effects, nonlinearity and environmental radiation enter the measurand model. A high maximum temperature or fine display resolution is not validated accuracy.
Conditions and scope
- Specify thermodynamic versus scale temperature, spectral band, target emissivity/temperature uniformity and SI-traceable radiometric calibration.
- Check detector/transfer drift, blackbody departures and independent comparisons in the intended temperature range. NIST's overview supports the method, not a universal numerical uncertainty for every device.

Evidence and review
Inspected blackbody/detector calibration description and comparison routes; service overview, not a universal uncertainty specification; source check dated 2026-10-10. Scope is limited to the cited statements, equations and assumptions, not the whole publication. Inspected §§8.5, 10.4–10.6, 11.4, 11.6–11.10, 12 and Annex B: shared effects, inverse calibration, time series and prior sensitivity; source check dated 2026-10-10. Scope is limited to the cited statements, equations and assumptions, not the whole publication.
