Ginzburg–Landau describes superconductivity through a complex order parameter, symmetry and a gradient/field-dependent free energy, yielding a coherence length and electromagnetic response.
Key knowledge
Ginzburg–Landau describes superconductivity through a complex order parameter, symmetry and a gradient/field-dependent free energy, yielding a coherence length and electromagnetic response. It parametrizes macroscopic behaviour near an appropriate transition; it does not determine the microscopic pairing interaction. BCS instead models correlated fermion pairs and an excitation gap from an attractive interaction.
Conditions and scope
- GL expansion requires slowly varying order parameter and a regime where low-order terms are adequate; parameters must be fitted or derived for the material.
- Original weak-coupling phonon-mediated BCS is not a quantitative description of every superconductor. Pairing symmetry, gap anisotropy and strong correlations must be specified.
