Two static clocks outside a Schwarzschild source compare proper rates through √(1−r_s/r).
Key knowledge
Two static clocks outside a Schwarzschild source compare proper rates through √(1−r_s/r). A photon emitted at r_e and received at r_o has ν_o/ν_e=√[(1−r_s/r_e)/(1−r_s/r_o)]. This is an observer-dependent observable: moving emitters/receivers add Doppler effects, and a freely falling observer is not a static clock.
Values and equations
dτ/dt=√(1−r_s/r); ν_o/ν_e=√[(1−r_s/r_e)/(1−r_s/r_o)]

- Proper and coordinate times s
- r,r_e,r_o,r_s
- Areal radii m
- ν_o,ν_e
- Locally measured reception/emission frequencies Hz
Conditions and scope
- Static supported observers at r_e,r_o>r_s, stationary exterior and freely propagating photon; ν is locally measured frequency.
- In the weak-field limit (ν_o−ν_e)/ν_e≈(Φ_e−Φ_o)/c², with Φ=−GM/r. Clock uncertainty also includes motion, environment and potential determination.
