Slope and straight lines
Read a straight line as a stated relationship, calculate its slope from consistent signed coordinate changes, and interpret its intersections with the axes. Keep horizontal, vertical and coincident-point cases distinct, attach units and domain conditions to context models, and use numerical scales rather than appearance alone to judge a line’s change.
Key knowledge
The slope of the line through two points with different x-coordinates is (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁). This ratio is constant along a straight line. A vertical line has no finite slope in this coordinate convention.
Values and equations
m = (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁)
- m
- Slope
- (x₁,y₁), (x₂,y₂)
- Two distinct points with different x-coordinates
Conditions and scope
- Require x₂ ≠ x₁.
- For measured quantities, slope has y-units per x-unit; visual steepness also depends on axis scales.
