Symmetry and invariance
Specify a transformation, identify what stays unchanged, and distinguish symmetry of an object from invariance of a physical model.
Key knowledge
In the Lagrangian setting of Noether's theorem, a continuous family of coordinate transformations that leaves the Lagrangian invariant gives an associated quantity conserved along solutions of the equations of motion.
Conditions and scope
- Applies to the differentiable Lagrangian formulation and continuous symmetries described in the source.
- Discrete symmetry alone does not supply this Noether conclusion.

Agreement within this scope
Continuous differentiable Lagrangian invariance gives a conserved quantity along Euler–Lagrange solutions.
The inspected theorem requires a continuous parameter; discrete symmetry alone is outside it.
