Rubisco oxygenation and photorespiratory salvage
Rubisco's oxygenase activity produces a three-carbon phosphoglycerate and a two-carbon phosphoglycolate from RuBP.
Key knowledge
Rubisco's oxygenase activity produces a three-carbon phosphoglycerate and a two-carbon phosphoglycolate from RuBP. Photorespiratory processing recovers carbon but can release CO₂ and consume energy. The competition with carboxylation depends on CO₂/O₂ availability, temperature and enzyme properties.
Conditions and scope
- Photorespiration is not mitochondrial respiration or a universally dispensable waste process.
- Carbon-concentrating adaptations can reduce rather than abolish oxygenation.
