Accretion-powered galactic nuclei and observational inference
Active galactic nuclei can radiate strongly as matter accretes around a central supermassive black hole.
Key knowledge
Active galactic nuclei can radiate strongly as matter accretes around a central supermassive black hole. Evidence combines compact variable emission, spectra, orbital or gas kinematics and other observations. Radiation comes from matter and fields outside the event horizon; accretion is distinct from a signal emitted from inside it. Jets and obscuration affect what is observed, so observing-band luminosity and isotropic-equivalent luminosity require interpretation.
Conditions and scope
- Inference requires a physical geometry, distance, extinction, inclination and variability model; gas need not be purely circularly orbiting. A bright unresolved source alone does not establish a unique black-hole mass.
- Not every galaxy is active and not every active nucleus has a visible jet. Jet launching, energy partition and population orientation effects need fuller models; no exact universal efficiency, current census or particular object's present mass is supplied.

Evidence and review
Read actual compactness/kinematic/accretion and jet bodies plus Miller's compact energy-supply/disk argument. Retained established physical interpretation with model dependence. Excluded all-galaxies-have-SMBHs, old mass/count/record-holder values, a direct-horizon-photo interpretation and the blanket assertion that a black hole can emit no radiation of any kind.
