Major biomolecule classes
Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids organize much of cell chemistry.
Key knowledge
Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids are major classes of biological molecules. Their structures support energy storage, membranes, catalysis and information transfer. Many carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids are polymers; lipid classes include diverse structures rather than one repeating-unit architecture.
Conditions and scope
- A molecule class can have several functions, and one function can involve several classes.
- These four classes do not exhaust cell chemistry: water, ions and smaller metabolites also matter.
