Production, respiration and trophic transfer
Production is a flow over time, whereas biomass is a standing amount.
Key knowledge
Gross primary production is the rate at which primary producers incorporate energy or carbon. Net primary production subtracts their respiration from that gross production. Transfers between trophic levels depend on consumption, assimilation and production; no one efficiency applies to all ecosystems.
Conditions and scope
- Use compatible area, time and energy or carbon units across the budget.
- Standing biomass differs from production rate; estimates depend on system boundaries and methods.
