Organic functional groups
Characteristic structural groups organize organic compounds and recurring reactivity.
Key knowledge
A functional group is a recognizable atom arrangement associated with characteristic chemical behaviour. Common groups include alcohol, carbonyl, carboxyl, amine and carbon–carbon multiple-bond groups. They organize compound families and help compare reactivity across molecular structures.
Conditions and scope
- Neighbouring groups, steric structure, solvent and reaction conditions can change behaviour.
- Group identity alone does not guarantee a particular reaction product.
