Planetary formation in young-star disks
Disk observations and competing growth mechanisms inform planet-formation models.
Key knowledge
Planet-formation models describe growth within gas and dust disks around young stars. Core-accretion pathways build solids and can then accumulate gas; sufficiently massive, cooling disks may instead undergo gravitational fragmentation. Observations constrain these pathways and subsequent system evolution.
Conditions and scope
- This is a set of formation models, not proof that every disk feature is a planet or that all planets form by one route.
- Disk conditions and observational interpretation affect which pathways explain a particular system.
