Emergence and levels of description
Choose a descriptive level, connect collective quantities with component behavior, and check when a simpler physical description answers a specified question.
Key knowledge
Interacting many-component systems can exhibit collective behavior that a description of a few isolated components does not reveal. Understanding that behavior can require variables and models at the collective scale.
Conditions and scope
- This is a modeling perspective illustrated in many-body physics, not a theorem that all complex systems have the same behavior.

Scope or convention differs
Active-matter collectives can require density and velocity fields that describe behavior absent from an isolated particle.
The active-matter example supports emergence as a useful perspective, without turning it into a universal theorem.
