Order of arithmetic operations
Grouping and equal-priority arithmetic evaluation.
Key knowledge
Evaluate explicit groups from the inside outward, then powers, then multiplication and division from left to right, and finally addition and subtraction from left to right. Operations sharing a priority are evaluated together; multiplication does not automatically precede division.
Conditions and scope
- Use ordinary arithmetic notation with explicit grouping and defined operands.
- An ambiguous division slash or juxtaposition needs parentheses; this rule does not settle every typography convention.
