Right-prism and cylinder volumes
Volume and surface area measure different aspects of a solid.
Key knowledge
A right rectangular prism has volume LWH. A right circular cylinder has volume πr²h. In each case volume is base area times perpendicular height, measured in cubic units rather than the square units of surface area.
Values and equations
V_prism=LWH; V_cylinder=πr^2h
- L, W, H
- Rectangular-prism edge lengths length
- r, h
- Cylinder radius and perpendicular height length
- V_prism, V_cylinder
- Solid volumes length³
- π

Conditions and scope
- Use positive dimensions in one common length unit.
- These formulas assume the stated ideal Euclidean solid; they do not give the volume of an arbitrary tapering or irregular shape.
Right rectangular prisms and right circular cylinders. Velocity-area aside excluded; no arbitrary-solid formula.
