Fractions
Choose a whole, count equal fractional units, and connect sharing with division. Place fractions on the number line, including values beyond one, and explain what their numerator and denominator mean.
Key knowledge
A rational number can be written a/b with integers a and b and b ≠ 0. Multiplying numerator and denominator by the same nonzero integer preserves its value.
Values and equations
a/b = (ka)/(kb), with b ≠ 0 and k ≠ 0
- a, b, k
- Integers
Conditions and scope
- Different written fractions can represent the same rational number.
- In a part-of-a-whole model, the denominator counts equal parts of the same whole.

Scope or convention differs
Equivalent fractions and integer-numerator/nonzero-integer-denominator rational values.
The part-whole examples use positive fractions; the real-number chapter admits signed rationals.
