Gradient, divergence and curl
These coordinate derivatives have different input and output types.
Key knowledge
In Cartesian R³, ∇f=(fₓ,fᵧ,f_z); for F=(P,Q,R), div F=Pₓ+Qᵧ+R_z and curl F=(Rᵧ−Q_z,P_z−Rₓ,Qₓ−Pᵧ). Gradient and curl are vector-valued; divergence is scalar-valued.
Conditions and scope
- Use differentiable scalar and vector fields; C¹ is a sufficient common assumption.
- These component expressions are for an oriented orthonormal Cartesian frame.
