First-order predicates and quantifiers
Quantifiers bind variables over a specified domain.
Key knowledge
In classical first-order logic, ∀x φ holds when φ holds for every domain element; ∃x φ holds when it holds for at least one. Free variables require an assignment.
Conditions and scope
- Use a nonempty domain and fixed interpretations of constants, functions and relations.
- Quantifier order and variable binding matter; quantification over arbitrary properties is second-order.
