Completeness of the real numbers
Upper-bounded nonempty real sets have least upper bounds.
Key knowledge
Every nonempty subset of R bounded above has a supremum in R. This order-completeness property distinguishes R from Q.
Conditions and scope
- The supremum is the least real upper bound, and need not belong to the set.
- Nonemptiness and an upper bound are required.
