Real singular value decomposition
Any real rectangular matrix has orthogonal factors.
Key knowledge
Every real m×n matrix A admits A=UΣVᵀ with orthogonal U,V and rectangular diagonal Σ having nonnegative entries. These singular values are square roots of eigenvalues of AᵀA, with zero padding as needed.
Values and equations
A = UΣVᵀ
- A
- Real m×n matrix
- U
- Orthogonal m×m matrix
- V
- Orthogonal n×n matrix
- Σ
- m×n diagonal matrix of nonnegative singular values
Conditions and scope
- Use Euclidean inner products and compatible matrix dimensions.
- Factors may not be unique, especially at repeated or zero singular values.
