Dynamic instrument response
Response depends on timescale, gain and phase.
Key knowledge
For a linear time-invariant response in sinusoidal steady state, transfer function H(ω) = Y(ω)/X(ω) specifies output gain and phase. Step-response time instead needs a stated settling band around the final indication.
Values and equations
H(ω) = Y(ω)/X(ω)
- H
- Complex transfer ratio; output-unit/input-unit
- X, Y
- Input and output phasors with their physical units
- ω
- Angular frequency rad s⁻¹
Conditions and scope
- The transfer relation is conditional on linear time invariance and nonzero input phasor in a calibrated range.
- Real instruments need their own response model; no universal first-order time constant is assumed.
