Resolution and sensitivity
Detectable change and response scale are different instrument properties.
Key knowledge
Resolution is the smallest input change producing a perceptible indication change. Sensitivity is the ratio of indication change to input-quantity change; it can depend on operating value.
Values and equations
sensitivity = Δindication / Δinput
- Δindication
- Indication change with its indication unit
- Δinput
- Measured input change with its quantity unit
- sensitivity
- Response ratio; unit [indication]/[input]
Conditions and scope
- State operating conditions, indication units and input units.
- For evaluating sensitivity, input changes must be large compared with resolution; neither property alone determines total uncertainty.
