Gaussian smoothing defines a classifier by the most probable prediction of a base classifier under N(0,sigma²I) noise.
Key knowledge
Gaussian smoothing defines a classifier by the most probable prediction of a base classifier under N(0,sigma²I) noise. If the top-class probability is at least p-A and every competitor is at most p-B, the smoothed prediction is certified within L2 radius sigma/2 times [Phi-inverse(p-A)−Phi-inverse(p-B)]. Finite Monte Carlo estimates need confidence bounds and can abstain. The certificate covers that smoothed classifier and metric, not arbitrary semantic edits or every deployment shift.
Values and equations
R=(sigma/2)[Phi^(-1)(p_A)−Phi^(-1)(p_B)]
- sigma
- Gaussian smoothing standard deviation in input units
- p_A
- Lower bound for the predicted class probability
- p_B
- Upper bound for competing class probabilities
- Phi
- Standard normal cumulative distribution
Conditions and scope
- Use a positive noise scale, p-A>p-B and statistically valid bounds for the class probabilities.
- Radius is in the input's L2 units; confidence error in estimated probabilities must be reported.

Evidence and review
Author checked this English statement, displayed equation where present and stated hypotheses against these source locations: Theorem 1 and Algorithms 1–2: Gaussian smoothing, L2 radius and statistical confidence. The check is bounded to the recorded claims; no complete proof reconstruction, software proof replay or universal literature completeness is claimed.
