Scaled dot-product attention computes softmax(QK-transpose/sqrt(d-k))V, allowing token representations to combine context through learned query/key/value projections.
Key knowledge
Scaled dot-product attention computes softmax(QK-transpose/sqrt(d-k))V, allowing token representations to combine context through learned query/key/value projections. Vaswani and colleagues' original Transformer uses multi-head attention and position information in a sequence-to-sequence translation model. Good predictive language performance does not alone establish causal understanding, factual verification, privacy or reliable behavior under changed inputs.
Values and equations
Attention(Q,K,V)=softmax(QK^T/sqrt(d_k))V
- Q,K,V
- Query, key and value matrices
- d_k
- Dimension of each query/key vector
- softmax
- Row-wise normalized exponential over permitted positions
Conditions and scope
- Specify masks, positional information, tokenization, task loss and training/evaluation population.
- The 2017 paper is a significant original architecture study; it is not a benchmark of every present large language model.

Evidence and review
Author checked this English statement, displayed equation where present and stated hypotheses against these source locations: §3.2 scaled dot-product attention, encoder/decoder and translation experiments. The check is bounded to the recorded claims; no complete proof reconstruction, software proof replay or universal literature completeness is claimed.
