A smooth n-manifold has locally Euclidean charts with smooth invertible transition maps, together with Hausdorff and second-countable topology.
Key knowledge
A smooth n-manifold has locally Euclidean charts with smooth invertible transition maps, together with Hausdorff and second-countable topology. A tangent vector can be defined as a derivation at a point or as a curve velocity modulo equal coordinate derivatives. Coordinate components change by the derivative of the transition map; the vector is independent of the chart.
Values and equations

Conditions and scope
- Use a smooth atlas; chart images are open subsets of R-n. Boundary charts require the half-space version.
- The derivative of each transition is invertible; a singular parameterization does not itself give a chart.
