Reference-material value assignments have distinct status.
Key knowledge
Reference-material value assignments have distinct status. A certificate must identify the property, matrix, intended use, uncertainty, traceability, validity and handling. NIST distinguishes certified values from other information and research-grade development material; a candidate material or supplier specification cannot be substituted for a validated certified measurand.
Conditions and scope
- Check the actual certificate version and individual property status, not just the material's SRM label; homogeneity and stability apply to specified sampling/handling.
- Commutability with real samples, matrix effects and method scope need evidence. Certification does not guarantee an unrelated laboratory's result.

Evidence and review
Inspected certified/reference/research-grade categories and ISO33401:2024 certificate contents; checked 2026-10-10; source check dated 2026-10-10. Scope is limited to the cited statements, equations and assumptions, not the whole publication. Inspected pages 1–3 and appendices A–B: use/storage, certified mercury versus non-certified PFAS and values of potential interest; source check dated 2026-10-10. Scope is limited to the cited statements, equations and assumptions, not the whole publication.
