A nonlinear polarization drives new frequency components.
Key knowledge
A nonlinear polarization drives new frequency components. In undepleted plane-wave second-harmonic generation with constant coupling, the generated amplitude sums phases along the medium; its intensity scales as L²sinc²(ΔkL/2), Δk=k_2ω−2k_ω. Phase matching therefore depends on dispersion, polarization and geometry rather than intensity alone.
Values and equations
I_(2ω)∝I_ω²L²sinc²(ΔkL/2); Δk=k_(2ω)−2k_ω

Conditions and scope
- Slowly varying envelopes, narrowband plane waves, negligible absorption/pump depletion and specified second-order tensor/coupling; sinc x=sin x/x.
- Centrosymmetric bulk electric-dipole media lack ordinary χ⁽²⁾; surfaces, higher multipoles or other processes differ. Walk-off, focusing and depletion require coupled propagation.
