Learning Science · A goal and evidence of progress

What would useful learning let you do?

Turn a broad wish into a learning target that describes a useful action and the conditions of success.

Use the examples to connect this lesson with the earlier topics. No specialist equipment is needed.

Back to the chapter

After reading, you can

  • Write an observable goal
  • Separate activity from capability
01

From a wish to an action

“I want to understand household bills” is a worthwhile wish, but it leaves the next practice step unclear. A more usable target is: given a sample electricity bill, identify the billing period, explain the main charge and check whether the total matches the listed items. The goal now suggests evidence.

An observable action need not be a simple numerical score. A defensible interpretation, a reasoned design or a careful conversation can be observed through appropriate criteria. Choose an action that represents what matters, rather than selecting whatever happens to be easiest to count.

02

Include the conditions

State what information, tools and support are permitted. Checking a bill with a calculator differs from doing every calculation mentally. If a calculator is available in the real task, using it correctly may belong in the goal. Do not silently remove a useful tool to make a task look more rigorous.

Specify a reasonable standard. For a bill check, identifying the relevant amounts and explaining a discrepancy matter more than speed. For an emergency procedure, timeliness may be essential. Conditions and criteria turn an attractive phrase into a guide for practice and feedback.

Turn the wish into a task, conditions and a meaningful check.
Part of the goalConcrete wordingWhy it changes the practice
Useful actionIdentify the billing period; explain a charge; check listed items against the totalRequires reading and checking the bill
ConditionsA sample bill and a calculator may be usedTests competent resource use
CriterionRelevant amounts are selected and any discrepancy is explainedMakes accuracy and reasons visible
Study activityRead a guide or practise for a planned periodCreates an opportunity; does not itself show the capability
03

Keep a larger purpose

A small target is a starting point, not the whole education. After the bill example, the learner may compare tariffs or question an unexpected charge. Write the immediate action and the larger purpose together. Revisit the target if experience reveals that a different capability would better serve that purpose.

Avoid combining so many capabilities into one target that failure becomes uninterpretable. Begin with a bounded useful action and keep a route to the larger purpose. If checking a bill requires unfamiliar arithmetic, teach that relationship explicitly while retaining the bill as the reason the calculation matters.

Worked example

Rewriting a language goal

How can a language-study session be turned into a goal about using greetings?

  1. Name the communication: begin a brief greeting, respond and ask how someone is in the intended setting.
  2. State whether a script, word list or partner prompt is permitted and what makes the response suitable.
  3. Practise with a partner who varies the greeting slightly, then record whether the learner can respond under the planned support conditions.

Time spent studying can help reach the goal. The evidence is the greeting and response under stated conditions, judged for meaningful communication rather than minutes alone.

Try it yourself

Think through each question before opening the answer.

  1. Rewrite “read three chapters about weather.”

    Show the answer and reasoning

For example: use a forecast to explain the expected weather for tomorrow and choose suitable clothing, giving reasons. Reading may help reach this target.

The revised target requires a visible use of weather information. Reading remains a route toward that ability, while the explanation connects the chosen clothing to the actual forecast.

  2. Why include permitted tools?

    Show the answer and reasoning

They define the capability being checked and prevent confusing independent recall with competent tool use.

A tool can be part of competent performance. Naming it in advance prevents a result with that tool from silently becoming a claim about unsupported recall.

  3. A bill-checking goal says only “be faster”. What additional criterion would make it useful?

    Show the answer and reasoning

Correctly identify the relevant amounts and explain a discrepancy, with permitted tools stated.

Speed becomes informative only alongside the accuracy and reasoning needed for the purpose. An incorrect faster check would not meet the intended goal.

What to carry forward

  • Name a useful action.
  • State support and meaningful criteria.
  • Keep the action connected to a wider purpose.
